Camera Flash!

Camera Flash!

Ok. I know it’s been a while since I posted anything photography related.  Well… I have some exciting news… I got a new external flash!  It’s a very early Christmas present, but I am so excited about it!

Why would I get an external flash?  Isn’t the one on the camera “good enough”?  First.  I NEVER thought that the next photography related purchase I would buy would be a flash.  Since I take most of my photos in the daylight I really didn’t think that I would ever need it.  I now realize how much  a flash can be used for and it can give SO much flexibility!   !

Here are some examples of what an external flash can do.  I am sure that in the next few months I will have a lot more photos to compare, but since I just got this tonight… these example will have to do!  (please don’t judge my in-experience here!!!)

So which lighting option would you choose?  I personally like the middle right pic… I think it gives nice shadows and lighting!  There is so much more I will need to learn, but to say the least… I will have fun with my SB-910!

  1. Great purchase! My external flash does not rotate, so I can only use it in the landscape orientation. Bwah. Also can’t adjust the intensity. This “black foamie thing” technique I tried once with a white card, didn’t make much difference. Then again, I have a lot to learn too. My fav photo middle, right too!

    • The black foamie thing is different because it blocks the light from hitting areas that don’t need it… the white reflector helps to bounce the light where the black foam helps to block it… so for the right middle pic it helped block the light from directly hitting her face like the pic right before it. It’s only subtle, but maybe because I am just now learning all of this! Thanks for stopping by, Lisa!

  2. I like the middle right the best, too! I am just getting started with photography, so thanks for the timely post!

  3. I’m so excited for you! I love my speedlight!
