State Themed Recipes!

State Themed Recipes!

Hey y’all!  I am looking for some state themed recipes for homeschooling this year!  We are studying US history and I thought that it would be fun to eat foods that are popular for each state with my girls as I teach them about that state.  I’ve done a quick internet search, but I didn’t find much to go off of.  I thought what better than to ask all my friend here!  So give me your thoughts and recipes and I would greatly appreciate it… then I will share all that I have found!!!

Here are two of my cuties eating Watermelon which is Oklahoma’s State “Vegetable”.  Yep… we live in a weird state… LOL! :P   We love Oklahoma though… it’s home sweet home!

  1. I know the state fruit for Massachusetts is the cranberry. And here is a receipt that I love – Cranbery Nut Bars: http://stacyjulian.com/blog/?p=6311

Also, for regional items – New England Clam chowder is a good one. It is cream or broth-based and often has potatoes and onions. Manhattan (or NY) clam chowder, I believe, has a tomato base and no cream. I’ve only had New England Clam Chowder, so I can’t really comment on the other ;-) I don’t have a receipt handy for that one, but I’m sure you’ll find some pretty easily!

    What a great idea!!

  2. I am from Maryland, home of the blue crab. I would suggest making crab cakes. You can get crab meat from your local grocery store.

This link seems to be a pretty good recipe to day! Sounds like so much fun.

  3. Your state vegetable is a fruit? Haha! I live in MD now, so good call on the blue crab recipe above! But my home is Philly, PA, so I’d say soft pretzels or cheesesteaks. You could even combine both with this pretzel bread recipe from King Arthur Flour http://pinterest.com/pin/92534967314033285/. Ugh, I’m so hungry now ;)

    • Oh, that’s a wonderful idea Lisa! Thanks so much! The watermelon supposedly can be either classified as a fruit or veggie, but you would think that our state knew that no one would actually be calling a sweet watermelon as a vegetable! LOL Of course our state flower is not really a flower either it the mistletoe which is a moss… :/

  4. I’m a Florida girl, so fresh squeezed orange juice or key lime pie would be top on my list! Here’s a fun link:

  5. I live in Ohio, home of the Ohio State Buckeyes (Go Bucks!), so buckeyes are big here. Meaning the chocolate/peanut butter kind as well as the football kind. ;)

  6. I am now living in New Mexico and it’s all about Chiles:) Not sure if chile recipes would be good for children since it does have a bit (spicy or hot flavor) But if you use the mild green canned chiles this is a great recipe:)

Have fun this year, it sounds like a great project

  7. I’m from St. Louis, MO. Toasted ravioli is VERY popular here, and is fairly easy to make!

  8. Virginia, where I live (and hubby’s home state) is known for its ham.
My home state of Tennessee isn’t really known for one particular thing, but this website is interesting and may be helpful: http://tennessee-guide.info/food.

  9. Have you find the right theme now

  10. Currently, I live in Wisconsin where you really must learn to LOVE cheese. :) Fried cheddar nuggets are on the menu at pretty much every restaurant. http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Fried-Cheese-Nuggets We moved from Alabama, where Barbecue and Sweet Tea are staples.
