Thrifty Thursday: Alphabet Stones

Notes: I made this project last year and after trial and error I have added some notes and changes!

Want a fun and stylish way to display the alphabet on your fridge?   Or maybe leave the magnets off and use these stones as a game.  Either way these alphabet stones are sure to please your little one who will be playing and learning for hours!  (This is a choking hazard for those under 3!)
Alphabet Stones

What you will need:
white paper with letters printed out OR White paper with alphabet stickers placed on top: 0-$2.00 (edit: use a thick white paper or cardstock)
2 bags smooth round glass stones- Dollar Tree- $2.00
26 Magnets optional: $3.50- $6.00
 other items
e6000 glue  I have found that using silicone sealer works best for this project.*****
mod podge-  I have found that using silicone sealer works best for this project. *****
 scissors

Total Cost:  $2.00- $10.00
 Directions:

Take one of the stones and trace around it 26 times on a piece of paper then stick your letters inside the circles.  OR Print out sheet of letters and trace with the stone around the letters.

Cut out each circle and modpodge  (edit: Use the silicone sealer!!!! ) glue it on the back of each stone.  Just put a dot of silicone sealer on top of your circle and smoosh the glue until it is flat.

Wait until it dries then glue the magnets on with your E600 glue  USE SILICONE SEALER!!! (if you are making them into magnets).  They will take a while to dry.
Now let the kids have fun!!! AND you won’t mind leaving these pretties up on the fridge all the time!!!

Happy Creating!!!

  4. Patricia L :

I love this! I've made glass stone magnets before, but to do the alphabet would be pretty darn cool.

  5. Beautiful – and so original. I'm definitely trying this. My kids will love it! Thanks.

  6. Taylor {Sew Much Love} :

I made these once with scrapbook paper but I never thought to do ones with the alphabet on them! This will be so perfect for teaching my daughter in a cute way! You're so good!!!

  7. What type of glue is used to glue to the rocks?

  8. Baseball Mom :

I did these on a smaller scale, put them on thumbtacks and used them on my sons' bulletin boards. The liked them because they could hang their necklaces from them.

  9. Love this idea and want to make some. Have a question: you listed mod podge in the items you'll need .. where did you use it? Is it to attach the paper circle to the stone?

  10. i tried this tonight and the magnet showed right through the white paper. i was using printer paper. should i use thicker paper?

  11. Rachel {BubblyNatureCreations.com} :

Anonymous- you can try it with thicker paper… mine was just printer paper, but the thickness of printer paper often varies. Try a plain white scrapbook paper… I wouldn't go as think as cardstock though.

  12. This is perfect! I have a metal drip pan from walmart ($12) that I need fun magnet activities to do with my kids and I have the stones already! YAY! Thanks!

  13. I can’t wait to try this. My grandson is 18 months old and these will be perfect for teaching the ABC’s

  14. Where would I find silicone sealer? What is it with, say, in Hobby Lobby or Michael’s?

Super cute! Looking forward to making these!

  15. Where do you get the $1 sheet metal?
